Day 5: Saturday, 05/12/18, Vicksburg to Greenville, MS

Map of today's ride:

Distance of  Today's Ride: 100.1 miles
Trip Total Distance: 383.5 miles
Elevation Gain:  935 feet
Riding Time:  6:27 hrs:mins

Today was another great day for riding with interesting vistas, fairly smooth roadways, favorable breezes, and clear skies. When we left Vicksburg shortly after 7:00am, the temperature was 65 degrees, and as we were entering Greenville this afternoon, the temperature was 93 degrees. A lot of water was consumed again today to stay hydrated!

The scenery changed quite dramatically today. We went from very heavily wooded to major farming operations the closer we got to Greenville.

A bayou along side the road we traveled today.

Typical agricultural scene. Corn appeared to be the primary crop in our travels today.
We met these two large John Deere machines on the road this afternoon. The equipment attached looked like some sort of combination disk and plow. Note the rubber tracks on the vehicles. That would indicate that they work in very wet fields where a tired vehicle would get stuck.

Warning signs indicated that we were not going to be able to cross the bridge.  Fortunately, there was enough room for bikes but not cars.
This picture was taken from the bridge that was closed to vehicles.

Lake Washington is an oxbow lake in Washington County, Mississippi.  Once part of the contiguous Mississippi River, Lake Washington formed when the river changed its course about 1300 AD.  We saw boats fishing for crappie, bass, catfish and bream while riding down the lakeside road.
The Great River Road is a well-marked series of different roads and highways that roughly follow the winding course of the Mississippi River.  The white sign displays the green pilot's wheel logo to help identify which roads are part of the designated route.  The route has been selected for its natural, cultural, historical, recreational and scenic properties.  The Great River Road is designated as a National Scenic Byway.
A chocolate milk shake is in order to celebrate the 100 miles ridden today!

  1. Wayne; you are sooo creative; celebrate 100 miles with a shake; yippee. Complete 100 and 20 miles and you could add a Churrito to that shake. Always tomorrow. Happy Mother's Day Cheryl.
